As the largest metropolitan region of France by area, the Midi-Pyrenees region is superior in size to both the Netherlands and Denmark. With such substantial area and major cities like Toulouse and Tarbes, Midi-Pyrenees is a popular region with attractions for all to enjoy.
Midi-Pyrenees owes much of its popularity to its location, as it is conveniently located near the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and Spain at its southern border. The region is made up of many agricultural districts, with sweeping views of open farmland on casual foothills. With prominent agriculture comes the acclaimed wine of southern France. Midi-Pyrenees boasts 19 AOC certified wines, an elite title earned by the highest-quality French products and protected by the French government.
Considered one of the most important public projects in French history, the Canal du Midi starts in Toulouse, the capitol of Midi-Pyrenees, and connects the northern Garonne River from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. The canal offers stunning views of both Midi-Pyrenean pastureland and historic villages, while tree-lined waterways bring to mind a simple, yet stunning image of a timeless land. Boats can be hired in several towns for leisurely excursions down the canal.
In Toulouse, the Capitole de Toulouse attracts thousands of visitors each year. Containing the regional capital buildings and an administrative center, the neoclassical properties are supported by massive columns and grand bell towers. The famous Théâtre du Capitole, located next door to the city hall, has hosted operas and theater events since the early 18th century.
The stunning and snow-capped Pyrenees Mountains make up a large region of Midi-Pyrenees, and can be visited at Pyrenees National Park. One of Saturn’s moons, named Helene, was discovered at the Pic du Midi Space Observatory, located around 10,000 above sea level. This observation site has been crucial in the study of space and development of study programs worldwide. In addition to the many natural and historic wonders of Midi-Pyrenees, the region has become a hub for technology and aerospace development. Airbus maintains an advanced facility for building aircraft in this area, along with a wide variety of IT and communication companies based here.
