When Italy comes up in conversation, there are two things that come to mind: food and wine. Anyone who has had the pleasure visiting this beautifully cultured country can confirm there will be plenty of indulging. As the world’s largest producer of wine, as well as origin to some of the oldest wine-producing regions, you can definitely expect to consume your fair share of vino. No matter your destination, wine grapes are grown in each of the twenty administrative regions, each specializing in different types of wine as well as different varieties of grape. From Milan to Sicily, these different regions allow for unique, fresh and local wine selections anywhere you are present.
The system in which the Italian government classifies and labels wine works off of a four-tier quality hierarchy. The certification falls into three categories including DOCG(Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), the highest designation of quality, DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), a much more common but yet still quality wine, and IGT(Indicazione Geografica Tipica),designated to accommodate farmers that could not meet all the regulations a DOCG and DOC wine contain, but still remains a quality wine. When shopping for fine Italian wines, the price falls accordingly. But consumers should note, some IGT’s could hit the palate more gracefully then a DOCG- it is all personal preference!
