How to Dress Like a Parisian

October 22, 2015

The French have such a distinctive style. When walking down any busy Paris street, you are surrounded by very sharply dressed women, all looking like they just stepped off the Fall Fashion Week Runway. But how? And why can you so easily pick out Americans just because of what they’re wearing?

1. The Footwear

The French—or Europeans for that matter—do not wear running shoes unless they are actually going for a run, and the same goes for gym clothes. “Athleisure” is not a thing in France. So leave the sneakers at home, and get a pair of (comfortable) more fashionable shoes. Ballet flats will blend in very well.

2. Neutral, Neutral, Neutral!

The French typically do not have huge wardrobes, but rather chose quality over quantity and accessorize to make different looks. A lot of beige, black, and grey. Buying clothes in neutral colors is easiest to change and accessorize. Perhaps a camel colored coats with a fabulous blue scarf, or switch it up by pairing it with a statement black leather belt.

3. Make Sure it Fits

If your pants are slightly too long or your top not quite fitted to you, see a tailor to make the clothes work for you. Part of the reasons Parisians always look so nice is because they make sure the clothes are best suited to their body. Visiting a good tailor is million times better that wearing pants that don’t flatter you well.

4. The Classic White Shirt and Black Blazer

A clean, crisp white shirt is timeless and classic without being uncomfortable or too fancy. Throw on a fitted black blazer over top and you will have a great look that won’t seem like you made too much of an effort.

5. Jeans

As do Americans, the French love their denim jeans. However, with one variation: they always wear their jeans with heels. It gives the dressed-down staple a more classic and sophisticated vibe, and also makes your legs look long and slender!
