Handsome Properties is proud to be a sponsor of the St. Andrew’s annual student run charity fashion show, Don’t Walk.
The student organized and led fashion show at the prestigious school of Saint Andrews in Scotland originally started as a response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in New York City. The school wanted to create a project that would help raise money to the victims of 9/11 and thus, “Don’t Walk” was born. The named was coined from the busy life of a New Yorker and is a reference to the “Walk” and “Don’t Walk” street signs that can be found all over the “city that never sleeps.” The fashion show has since evolved to more than just a charity fashion show and more of a sincere and heartfelt collaboration of fashion and art.
The mission statement of Don’t Walk is:
“Art is our medium.
Society is our canvas.
We create in order to provoke.
We perform to call for action.
Ultimately, we do not aim to create something beautiful – we aim to create something meaningful.”
The fashion show is the perfect opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom, with some breathtaking examples of luxury European real estate. It is home to an important international golf tournament and also the basis of an infamous love story. The Don’t Walk Fashion Show has the honor of claiming to be the site of where Prince William first laid eyes on Kate Middleton! The story goes that when she walked down the runway in her lingerie outfit, the crowd was full of whispers and shocked looks while Prince William was smitten at first look. Today, the committee of Don’t Walk thrives on the provocative theme that is demonstrated throughout the show. The show is a vicarious mix of well-known and emerging talent.
The committee, as usual, is tight lipped about what this year’s show will be like. They have decided on the two charities that will benefit from the show and have let a few of the designers leak to the press such as, Topman and an emerging designer named Andy Jordan who has worked on the television show, Made In Chelsea. According to one of the executive creator directors of Don’t Walk, the two charities benefiting this year are, “Coalition for Work With Psychotrauma and Peace” – a charity based in Croatia, working towards the empowerment of people during or after armed conflict. The other is the “African Network against Illiteracy, Conflict and Human Rights Abuse – a charity, based in Cameroon, focused on pre-emptive measures to conflict.” The amount raised for charity continues to rise each year and last year they were able to raise over $38,000.
Handsome Properties International is proud to be sending three representatives over to attend the fashion show that will take place on Saturday, March 1st. The fashion show is sure to be a huge success and we are excited to be a part of such a great cause!
