Welcome to Puntarenas

The Costa Rican province of Puntarenas, comprising most of the tropical country’s pacific coast, is the largest Costa Rican province. Puntarenas, with its massive area, features many of Costa Rica’s most popular destinations and cultural centers. Jaco, Monteverde, and the famous Manuel Antonio National Park are a few of the sights Puntarenas has to offer. The Osa peninsula, featuring over five percent of the entire world’s biodiversity, is located in Puntarenas, as well as Isla del Coco, famous for its diving and snorkeling activities. Encompassing 4,350 square miles, Puntarenas is a well-developed area, thanks to many recent infrastructure updates. This province, along with most of Costa Rica’s western half, receives less rainfall than the rest of the country, especially during the drier months from December to May.

Many beach resorts and nature lodges call Puntarenas home, along with over 14 national parks, more than any other province. The Monteverde Cloud Forest, a mystical mountain rainforest in the northern part of the province, attracts many guests each year. Natural residents of the Cloud Forest include the Resplendent Quetzal (one of the most beautiful birds in the world), dozens of hummingbird species, dart and tree frogs, and 2500 documented species of plants. Further South on the Osa Peninsula, it is common to see migrating Humpback Whales, Scarlet Macaws, large Tapirs, and several species of Sloth.

For an upbeat social scene, Jaco is Costa Rica’s most visited beach, and a destination for nightlife. Featuring the best surfing in the country, Jaco has areas for surfing novices as well as seasoned experts. Much of the beach is surrounded by jungle, with several hiking trails in the area. The local restaurant scene features beachside sandwich shops along with a suite of bars for a relaxing drink. Jaco features a weekly farmers market, giving visitors the opportunity to sample local produce and meals. Costa Ricans are known for their many festivals, many of which take place on national holidays up and down the coast, especially in the provincial capital of Puntarenas. Festejos Populares is known for its bullfights, similar to that of Spain. Puntarenas is a perfect haven for those seeking an adventure in the tropics, with its many parks and destinations, it is hard to stop exploring here.
