The FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup is the world’s largest single sporting event and has been held every four years since 1930. Each FIFA World Cup takes place in a different country every four years.
The football (or soccer for the Americans) preliminaries are held throughout the three years leading up to each world cup to determine which countries will qualify to participate in the competition. There are an average of 200 entries and only 31 teams are chosen to compete in the FIFA World Cup.
According to FIFA, “The FIFA World Cup is the world’s most widely viewed sporting event; an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany and the 2010 event in South Africa was broadcast to 204 countries on 245 different channels.” This remarkable draw of attention from people all over the world has countries bidding for the opportunity to host the next FIFA World Cup. This year, Brazil is the host country, with Russia to host in 2018 and Qatar in 2022.
The USA plays one of the scheduled three games tonight against Ghana at 6:00pm EST. The Americans are in one of the toughest World Cup groups in the tournament with powerhouses Portugal and Germany competing in the same draw. The next US game is against Portugal on Sunday, June 22nd at 6:00pm and Thursday, June 26th at 12:00pm against Germany. The complete World Cup 2014 schedule can be found here.
The second best place to watch the World Cup after Rio de Janeiro would definitely be in Europe, where the FIFA World Cup is watched intensely throughout the entire competition. France, a World Cup participant, is especially excited to be able to play in this year’s tournament. To view our properties in France, Italy and Spain, visit Handsome Properties International.
