A Must-See in Monaco: Musée Océanographique

September 1, 2016

Prince Albert I of Monaco was an an avid explorer and ocean enthusiast. With his great passion for the sea and having gone on over 28 scientific expeditions, he inaugurated the Oceanographic Museum in 1910. It was his wish of “knowing, loving and protecting the oceans.” The oceanographic institute follows his legacy as it bridges the gap between the political, economical, and scientific community. The institute also focuses on educating the general public and promoting sea preservation, conservation, and sustainability.

The Oceanography Museum is somewhere you must visit if you find yourself in Monaco. Built on the side of a cliff often called the Rock of Monaco, the museum boasts panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. From the windows you can admire sailboats, dinghies, and mega-yachts coming in and out of the waterways to the Monaco Quays. The Museum is often called the Temple of the Sea due to its elegance and grandeur. It was built as a palace to be dedicated to art and science.

From a shark lagoon to natural history collection, a unique learning experience and appreciation for the ocean comes to everyone who visits. The museum also opens its doors to renowned artists and contemporary work that combine education and art.

With over 6000 specimens, the Oceanography Museum welcomes a full aquarium reconstructed to the species natural habitat. Walk amidst the dimly lit walls that are illuminated by light and glowing sea life. The underwater world, which is rarely seen, is placed right before your eyes. See coral reefs, sharks, and over 200 invertebrates inside the walls of this oceanographic temple.
