An independent bookstore, the first of these was opened by Sylvia Beach in 1919. The bookstore became a gathering for many renowned, but then aspiring writers like Ernest Hemingway and Ezra Pound. While the first bookstore closed down, the second was opened in 1951 and carries on as a very popular place for tourists and locals alike. If you’re lucky, while strolling through the secondhand books and novelties, you can even hear an ambitious poet or writer reciting his works outside of the store.
This boulevard, located in the 8th arrondissement, offers some of the best cafés and shops around all of Paris. Stores vary from Louis Vuitton and Cartier to Zara and Banana Republic, offering an assortment of options for any price range. At the conclusion of the avenue rests the Arc de Triomphe, which was constructed originally by Napoleon in honor of his win at the Battle of Austerlitz. The monument, however, was not completed until King Louis Philippe rule in 1836. It is a must see when making your way down the street.
Positioned in the 9th arrondissement, this market street is constantly bustling. More local than tourist based with a bohemian feel, it offers an array of attractions. Art galleries, antique jewelry shops, and boutiques are some of the staples, but the main event would have to be the food. Fresh and local, the delicious fruits and vegetables, cheeses, specialty olive oils and jams, and fresh baked pastries offered are extremely unique and delicious.
Started in 1612 by Queen Marie de Medicis, the Luxembourg Gardens are 23 hectares of pure bliss. The impeccably manicured lawns, beautiful statues, and colorful flowers all make for the perfect afternoon stroll. Allow yourself the the opportunity to bring a picnic chair, sit down, and enjoy a beautifully maintained piece of history appreciated and respected by all.
